HOLY  MARTYRS   MEN  TOGETHER  BOTH  ON  AND  OFF THE COURT  AT ACYOA  SENIORS D.C. SPORTS  WEEKEND

Fourteen of our Holy Martyrs Men and a number of our Girls traveled to Washington, D.C. for the ACYOA Seniors Sports Weekend, held near the Pentagon in Alexandria, VA, over the Memorial Day weekend. Holy Martyrs Bayside entered both the Men’s basketball and the Coed volleyball tournaments.

The 13-team basketball tournament started early on Saturday.  By 10:30 a.m., our Bayside men had won games over Washington team B and Detroit team B. In the afternoon, Bayside played Dallas and won the game and its bracket with a 3-0 record. Many of our first- and second-year players got much playing time in these opening round games.

The games then moved to Coed volleyball. Bayside won one game and lost one. Once again our younger players were utilized in these rounds. In the concluding round, Bayside tied for third place in volleyball and received a trophy at the Sunday night awards dinner.

The Men’s basketball semifinals were played late Saturday at 7 p.m.. when Bayside faced the eventual champion, Providence, who took an early first-half lead.  In the second half, Bayside came back and gained a six-point lead. However, two outside fadeaway shots by Providence narrowed Bayside’s lead to one. With 15 sec remaining in the game, a foul was called on Bayside, and Providence scored its two foul shots it won the game by one point.

Providence beat Detroit team A by single digits at the Sunday afternoon Final. Bayside also played on Sunday for third place. This time Bayside lost in double overtime by one point to Watertown.

We take this opportunity to thank Dan Antreasyan and Roy Ravul who arranged for the registration process. We also thank all our players and our player coaches Aret Akbork and Steve Dinelaris who did a commendable job. All these men started playing HM basketball in their preteen years. If you would like to see your 10-year-old a part of the above scene at age 20, your wishes alone will not make that happen. You may need to take the initial step by signing your son up for HM basketball at our church office.
