CHURCH ACTIVITIES
Holy Martyrs Basketball Wednesday, March 01, 2006

Our HM basketball teams went into the 2nd half of their ACSA schedules in January, all trying to reach the playoffs.  With five teams in their divisions, the Jrs., Srs., and Girls teams were all striving to reach the No. 3 spot in order to make the 2006 Playoffs in March.

The HM Girls won their first game in January but later on played St. Sarkis.  These two teams had split in their previous two games and the winner St. Sarkis took over third place to go into the playoffs.  It appears the lack of weekday practices by our very active girl players finally took its toll in the HM Girls team.

The Jrs. won their first game against the first place team Sts. Vartanantz in January and clinched 3rd place by beating St. Leon’s later in the month.  Sts. Vartanantz was undefeated until our boys took a 15 point lead into the fourth quarter and survived with a four point victory.  This took a full team effort where all played their best games of the season.  It also needs to be stated that they were led by the play of their team captains Mark Brewster and Edward Demaria and the game high 17 points scored by young Stefan Ovanessian.  Against St. Leon’s our HM Jrs. survived a first half deficit and took the lead in the third quarter on the quick scoring of Garen Spendjian and held the lead to the end.

On February 5th HM played St. Sarkis the 2nd place team.  They played a low scoring game and lost this time by a single point.  Mark Brewster led all scorers with 19 points and was ably assisted by his teammate Edward Demaria who played despite nursing the effects of a Saturday night illness.  These two teams meet again in the playoffs March5th when the No. 2 and No. 3 teams face one another with the winner facing Sts. Vartanantz at the March 12th ACSA Finals.

Our Srs. Team is still in the fight for 3rd place.  They played a very gutsy game against the much taller St. Sarkis Srs. on February 5th and lost by 4 points.  They received good game support from all of their players and were led by starters by Scott Herdemian, Raffi Babikian and Anthony Anttreasyan.  Despite this loss they are still in the hunt for third.  As Holy Martyrs split two games with the Sts. Vartanantz Srs. during the season, the winner of their next game will determine who gets the 3rd and last playoff spot for March.

This season we have run a Pre-Jrs. Clinic with boys ages 8 years and up in conjunction with our Jrs. Team program.  The clinic is attended by youngsters 8 and up as well as boys 9 to 14 on the Jr. team.  At first, fundamentals are worked on.  The remaining part of the session is relegated to team play where all of the participants are evenly assimilated into a half and full court game.  Parents interested in registering their boys into the program are asked to contact Sports Coordinator Misak Aprahamian at 516-365-7808 or the church office 718-225-0235, so that they can visit us at the gym.
