The Holy Martyrs Sunday School opened its doors at the Flushing YMCA in September of 1956. Yeretzgin Yefkin Megherian was the school’s first superintendent, and under her dedicated leadership, the school grew and flourished in Bayside. As enrollment increased the need for more space resulted in the building of our Community Center and additional classrooms in 1966. Over the years, the Sunday School has been blessed to have had many devoted superintendents, including Yeretzgin Rose Hallajian of blessed memory and Yeretzgin Patricia Buttero. Many caring parishioners have also volunteered their time to serve as superintendents, teachers, assistants, staff aides, program coordinators and class parents. Since 2006 the Sunday School has been administered by an Executive Board. We are truly grateful to all who have served our young people selflessly for God’s glory.
Today, enrolled from Pre-School through the 11th grade, students utilize the “We Believe” curriculum and other supplemental mini-series of the Diocesan Department of Youth and Education. Our students receive a formal education discovering the life and teachings of our Lord, the sacraments, prayers, saints, and church history. As part of the curriculum, our young Christian leaders not only study the Badarak, but they also attend our church Badarak. They are continuously learning Christian values and are always encouraged to participate in Christian outreach. It is our hope that the Sunday School will move into a new and fruitful era as we enter our next 50 years.
Help us strengthen our school by bringing your child(ren) to our Sunday School. The Sunday School meets each Sunday from 10am to 12 noon, September through May. If you have a child between the ages of 3 and 17 who would like to attend, or if you would like to be a Sunday School teacher or helper, please email Lara Ciamician at sundayschool@holy-martyrs.org or contact the church office at 718-225-0235.
The new Sunday School year starts each September, but we have rolling admission throughout the school year.
Our Sunday School plays a vital and indispensable role in educating, nurturing, and modeling our Armenian Orthodox Christian Faith to our most precious resource, our children. With this in mind, we pray that you seriously consider your parental responsibility in facilitating your child(ren)'s Armenian Orthodox Christian upbringing by enrolling them in our Sunday School program.
